The safety organisation of the United Nations, the IMO (International maritime organization), has decided that the 2010 World Maritime Day will have the theme of the Year of Seafarers. One reason for the choice, according to the UN organisation, is the revision of the STCW convention (Standards of training, certification and watchkeeping) which is to be established in Manila in the Philippines in June.
The theme will also put more focus on the need for increased recruiting of seafarers.
