Risk management at the SAN Conference 2011

Konferens, Tomas och CeciliaSAN Conference 2011:
Effective risk management - the key to safe shipping

For the sixth time, work environment friends within shipping gathered for an all-day conference together with SAN. This year’s theme, “Effective risk management - the key to safe shipping” had attracted an audience of about 80 to “Läppstiftet” in Gothenburg. First to the rostrum was the SAN chairman Lars Andersson, who talked about the human factor in accidents and the importance of preventive safety work. He then gave the word to Jörgen Zachow from the Swedish Transport Agency’s maritime division, who described the Agency’s approach to risk assessments onboard. He observed self-critically that “the Swedish Transport Agency is far too bad at putting this in focus”, but promised an improvement. Lena Kecklund from MTO Safety AB explained how to translate experience and lessons from safety and the working environment into practice. She said that we are often good at finding out what is wrong, but that it is more difficult to put knowledge into practice and correct the problems. Risk assessment of the psychosocial environment is something that many see as particularly difficult, but it is far from impossible. Anders Pousette from the Sahlgrenska Academy was able to demonstrate that. Elinor Gerle and Bo Lindgren, both from Stena Line, were also there to talk about how they work with these issues. Johan Högdén, Rederi AB Transatlantic, gave an entertaining and interesting speech about everyone’s right to a good, safe work environment. Martin Hernqvist came from the Swedish Club Academy and talked about how the insurance company is working to reduce the risk of injuries and accidents at sea. Last out was Cecilia Österman, doctoral student at Chalmers University of Technology and SAN representative and Tomas Lindberg from Shipgaz. Together they talked about SAN’S new work environment course, which is available on san-nytt.se from 24 October. Cecilia also showed the notebook that SAN has developed that can be used to note accidents, incidents and shortcomings onboard. At around five o’clock the audience and speakers gathered for a mingle buffet in the “Läppstiftet” restaurant to round off the day together.

SAN prize-winner 2011

This year’s SAN prize-winner is Linda Sundgren, freelance journalist and editor of SAN News.
Motivation: she wins the prize for her great commitment in covering and communicating work environment issues in shipping for many years in a very competent way, and because she has an outstanding ability to describe the most complex problems and situations in language that everyone can understand. Over the years, Linda has been responsible for excellent work at SAN. As I mentioned just now, she has been the editor of SAN News since 2004 and she has made it into a newspaper in the truest sense of the term. It now has a very professional look in terms of content, form and layout. Linda has also done a thorough and excellent job of upgrading SAN’s website and the design of SAN’s interactive work environment course, which will be presented later in the day. Over the years Linda has written many articles on the work environment for The Seaman, Nautical Officers and the Nautical Magazine.

Congratulations, Linda!!
