Confined spaces

It is well known among seamen that great care is needed before going into confined spaces onboard such as holds, tanks and storerooms. Organic materials – and rusting steel – can trigger chemical processes in which oxygen is used and poisonous gases may be produced. In a hold containing wood pellets, for example, the atmosphere may become absolutely lethal in a surprisingly short time.

Despite widespread knowledge of these phenomena in the shipping industry over many decades, serious accidents still take place in confined spaces on both Swedish and foreign ships around the world. It is impossible to overstate the importance of following safety measures prescribed when entering confined spaces.
