Many common chemicals can be replaced by less hazardous variants.

People working onboard ships sometimes come into contact with hazardous substances and chemicals. This is true in most departments, from the deck and machine room to hotels and restaurants, and for the most part different types of cleaning liquids contain harmful substances.

Since the Work Environment Act came into force onboard ships in 2003, controls and knowledge of chemical products at sea have increased considerably. The Act requires that lists are drawn up of products used that are hazardous to health or inflammable and prescribes that poisonous substances, if possible, shall be replaced by milder alternatives.

Everyone who works with chemicals also has a responsibility to decrease levels of exposure and it is important to follow recommendations about different types of protective equipment.
