Work environment issues at sea are promoted by several international organisations such as ILO (International Labour Organisation), IMO (International Maritime Organization), EU (Europeiska Unionen), ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) and IFSMA (International Federation of Shipmasters’ Association). Among other things, they treat issues such as working hours, manning and conditions onboard.
Decisions made by international organisations, however, are only minimum requirements that parties affected must fulfil. Many Swedish shipowners choose to go further and maintain a higher standard on their ships than that required by international rules and regulations.
